Comparing probabilities in urns: A study with primary school students

The study aimed to explore the strategies used by Costa Rican primary school students when comparing urn probabilities. sample was intentional and consisted of 55 6th graders. Using an interpretive approach, we analyzed children’s responses a questionnaire five probability comparison items taken from previous studies, including different levels proportional reasoning. Results indicate that problems in first reasoning were solved easily students, while at higher increased difficulty. One-variable strategies, which compare only favorable or unfavorable cases both urns, are predominant; although there correspondence few show complete Aside slight variations, results similar suggests this task is influenced more child’s level maturity than instruction received.
